Emily Serafy Cox

Executive Director

Emily Serafy Cox, Executive Director, has been working with EMPOWER San Diego since its founding in 2008.  As Executive Director, she facilitated EMPOWER's highly successful "Communities in Unity" Redistricting Coalition.

Ms. Serafy Cox's organizing in San Diego includes work with the Center for Social Advocacy, the Foundation for Change, Food and Water Watch, and Progressive San Diego.

Born in Madison, WI, Emily was raised in the Mennonite Christian tradition of Pacifism and consensus-based decision-making. She hold a BFA in Dance and Women's Studies from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. While at Minnesota, she helped organize student protests against the invasion of Iraq and in solidarity with the striking AFSCME 3800 workers on her campus. Emily also served as Student Body President (endorsed by the Campus Democrats, Campus Greens, and a coalition of progressive student groups) and helped elect Cam Cordon, a neighborhood organizer, to the Minneapolis City Council. After graduation, Emily served on the Capital Long Range Investment Committee for the City of Minneapolis.

For the record, Emily did not move to San Diego because the weather and she misses snow all winter long.
